Link... Evolution of marine crocodilians constrained by ocean temperaturesPincho says... My theory says that worms moved from the sea to land to grow legs, then become a sort of Salamander. Then the Salamander type creature moved back to the sea, and the legs become fins due to muscle loss. Now the fins have a memory of leg growth, and so fish can move back to land again. The salamander then becomes something bigger. Eventually we are up to a crocodile, and so the crocodile is moving between land, and water. It is said to become extinct during cold periods, but what if it is no longer a crocodile? The T-rex with its short front limbs look like it is becoming crocodilian, and it has the right sort of snout. Having short front limbs must make getting up difficult, so what if in the warm weather it moved into the water? Now it would not require the strength of its powerful hind legs, and could lean on its front limbs. So I think that crocodiles did not become extinct between land, and water phases. They changed into something else. Pincho Paxton
