It's not necessarily optimism, it could also be due to the opposite bias coming from the other direction... negativity bias. In other words the news that you get from others can be less generous in the bad news direction, they are more likely to criticise you than applaud you. This happens at work a lot when a boss will have you in the office for being late, but never in the office for starting work early to congratulate you... (That happened to me last week actually. I was taken into the office for too many breaks when they found out that I actually had no breaks at all, and it was a system error. I never got thanked for taking no breaks at all, but was asked to sign a paper saying that I was spoken to for taking too many breaks.) So the fault lies in both directions, and the actual optimism is just a counter to reality, and not actually a bias at all. Pincho Paxton
