Why can't rockets fly horizontally? Why do they travel up? I mean if you fire something fast enough, it orbits around the Earth. Why can't it be done like that? And then fire again to fly towards the objective?

All things move from high pressure at the back to low pressure at the front, that's why there's no such thing as a pull force. Even in space there is high pressure at the back moving asteroids towards the low pressure at the front. It's the same with magnetism, and nuclear bonding.
