Actually, it's to do with faulty empathy. In your mind you should have an empathy actor, a sort of puppet that can be used to replace the people around you so that you can feel their feelings. If your empathy puppet says that a person is sad then you feel sad for that person. That should also work correctly for how people will respond to your secrets.. unless it isn't an accurate puppet. So it is faulty empathy that is the reason that people keep secrets that are not as bad as they think they are.
