Light is like a raindrop on a pond, and that simplifies to a Y axis converts into an X/Z axis ring. An X/Z ring can also be converted back to a Y axis line. Light travels by switching between Y axis, and X/Z axis, it is like threading a doughnut with string. So a material that can do the same thing will have the same result as light propagation through space.
