The flow direction spins the holes to face the same direction, like the way that you have to twist some magnets to get them apart. The twist helps to point the holes in different directions. With gravity flowing through regular formations of holes there is less resistance, and so the area of least resistance is always forwards. But gravity in opposite directions causes collisions, and collisions create magnetic holes. Magnetic holes attract more gravity, so the strength increases through the area of least resistance.
