Evolution Does The Hokey Cokey

So evolution switches between gravity, and magnetism in spurts just like the Earth switches its magnetic polarity. The changes in evolution overlap each other like onion skins, so that colour patterns can become frills, and frills, can become gills, and destructive interference can become scales. The scales start in an X pattern, and then criss cross into an X/Z pattern. The X/Z pattern can turn a tail into a X shaped tail-fin.
